May Day Ball

  • Groton Grange Hall 80 Champney Street Groton, MA, 01450 United States (map)

Join Footwork & Frolick to celebrate the start of the Season, both Spring and Bridgerton! Dance in the main hall of the Groton Grange and welcome the return of flowers, sunshine, and Lady Whistledown from 7pm - 9:30pm on Saturday, May 4.

Dances will be taught throughout the evening, but those looking for additional practice - including an introduction to the waltz - can join us early for an afternoon workshop. Beginners welcome!

Schedule of events:

3:30-4:45 Workshop

Dinner break

6:30 Hall opens

7-9:30 Ball

What will the dancing be like?

Most of the dances will be set dances, which are walking through patterns with lots of couples arranged in long lines, squares, or a circle around the room. These dances will be taught throughout the ball. We will also play a few round (aka “couple”) dances which will be taught in the afternoon workshop. All dancing will be done to recorded music - including some songs you may recognize from the Bridgerton soundtrack.

Do I need a partner?

As was considered polite in the 19th century, we encourage guests to change partners throughout the evening. You do not need to bring a specific partner, although we encourage groups to attend - the more the merrier!

What should I wear?

Guests are encouraged to come dressed in whatever feels fancy and elegant. Historical costumes of the early 19th century will be admired but are certainly not required. We do recommend flat or low heeled shoes, as modern high heels are not conducive to historical dances.

If you attend the afternoon class, you will be able to leave any items or changes of clothes at the hall in between, and you will be able to change in the hall if desired. If you do not attend the class, we ask that you arrive in your ball attire as there is limited changing space in the Grange.

Will there be food?

Light refreshments will be served during the ball, but we strongly encourage eating dinner before the ball. Groton has several lovely restaurants for dinner near the Grange Hall at a range of price points. We recommend Bruno’s Pizza, Filho’s Cucina, Groton Publick House, or Tequila’s Cantina - but there are many more.
